The Rutherford Rises

×

Nelson's skyline is gradually changing as the Rutherford Hotel emerges from foundation level. Our photograph of the 3.1 million dollar project illustrates how the giant Linden tower-crane, with its 82ft jib, dominates the working areas. At the left is the twin-cage goods and personnel hoist. The first level, almost buried, is the basement and above that is the ground floor which will contain the bar and reception area. On the third level, or first floor, will be the manager's flat, staff facilities, kitchen and breakfast bar and the swimming pool. On the next floor will be conference rooms, kitchen and restaurant, lounge, house bar and service rooms. The next level, not yet started, will be the first of six accommodation floors. More than 70 men are employed on the site.

Smoko's the time to relax over a cup of tea, have a smoke and yarn to fellow workers
