This is a novel approach to 21st birthday cakes. Mrs A. Clements of Weka Street had the tins for the cakes especially made and she did the baking. Margaret Sharland carried out the delicate icing. The cakes were for the twin grand-daughters of Mr and Mrs Clements — Helen and Judith Welch, who were born in Nelson. They now live in Rangiora

Meet the mural painter at Ngawhatu Hospital, Mr H. T. Hirst. In his spare time Mr Hirst, a staff nurse, manages to throw a brush around, with successful results. His work is much in demand for decorating villas. Here he is working on a mural of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo. Behind him is the stage backdrop for theatrical productions, which he also painted. Ngawhatu will lose its mural painter when Mr Hirst retires next year, but the orders are coming in thick and fast so it seems that until he does retire Mr Hirst will be busy painting
