Nelson Trounces Coast

Nelson Bays played great football to repulse the Seddon Shield challenge of Marlborough. They played magnificent football while handing out a 34-6 drubbing to West Coast in the last challenge of the season at Rugby Park, Motueka. There was not one player who did not excel and a few played well above themselves. The score was a large one by shield standards, but it hardly reflected Nelson Bays superiority. Towards the end, at least four tries failed by inches, and seldom was the Bays defence strained. A few players deserve special mention - Rodney Bowater for the finest game of his career; Trevor Morris for his brilliance on attack and defence; Calvin Coachrane (until he broke his leg) and Bevan Grant, for their loose play. Above-Bevan Grant s flying tackle here effectively stopped Coast's dangerman, K. Beams.

Beams, who scored three tries earlier in the season in Coast's 19-6 victory over Nelson Bays, was closely marked in this game.
