Maori Culture Group at Ngawhatu

The organisers of a Maori culture group at Ngawhatu Hospital are surprised and delighted at the enthusiasm and progress made by the group since it was formed a few weeks ago. The group will become a sub-group of the Motueka culture group and if the enthusiasm is maintained there is every prospect that it will be as successful as its Motueka counterpart. The group comprises a big proportion of staff and patients of Ngawhatu Hospital, but on Sundays its numbers are swelled by other enthusiasts. When we visited Ngawhatu to take these pix, the group had been practising only three weeks. It was obvious that they had learned well from the organisers, Gene Clark and Eddie Murray. As it progresses, its members will be taught the Maori arts of piu piu, korowai and tapeka making.
