Nelson Retains McGlashen Cup

The McGlashen Cup, won by Nelson earlier in the season with a convincing win at Motueka, was retained when the Bays lost on Trafalgar Park, 18-8. Bays received an early set-back, being 10 points down in as many minutes. A penalty goal from in front and an opportunist try, however, took Bays to within two points of Nelson, but it could not improve on this score, Nelson scoring a goal and a penalty goal.

There was, however, little in this match to hearten either Nelson or Bays supporters. Bays showed a slight improvement on their earlier form against Nelson, but Nelson, if anything, lost a bit. The backs, particularly, did not move with the precision exhibited in the earlier match. Bays have since lost the Seddon Shield, and Nelson, after beating Marlborough well earlier in the season, was soundly trounced in the return game at Blenheim. Nelson's next match is for the shield, against Buller at Westport, a match which will have been played before this issue is published.
