The old Provincial Council Building, badly dealt with by time and termites, became a vast heap of rubble and timber as the contractors brought the building to the ground recently. Then, it was found, some sections of it (such as the formidable stonework surrounding the vaults, right), could have withstood a siege. Others were held together only by the borers' hands.
