Veterans of the Road

Members of the Nelson branch of the N. Z. Veteran and Vintage Car Club took off in convoy on a picnic recently. And of course they travelled in the cars on which they had lavished many hours of care and affection. Latest car to join the Nelson fleet is Andy Beattie's 1910 Martini (above). This car was originally purchased by the father of Nelson solicitor, Mr Jim Glasgow, in 1911, from J. C. Mercer and Co. who were located about where Miller and Co are situated in Trafalgar Street, today. Andy, who took over the car from Clive Mockett, of Murchison, spent five years on restoring her. He did such a wonderful job on the car that it brought him the Concorde d' Elegance award at the South Island rally earlier this year. The pic at left was taken when the car was owned by the Glasgow family. The lad on the side is reported to be Jim Glasgow's brother, Ted. The other pic shows the car as Andy got it.

Another Nelson car for which many enthusiasts would be willing to trade their eye teeth is George Topliss's 1923 20 h.p. Rolls Royce. This is a Barker-bodied tourer and every nut, bolt, screw and washer on it was taken apart, cleaned or replaced before being re-assembled.

The last time we saw Ken Ivory's Model T Ford he was just putting on the decking. Look's nice, Ken.

Geoff Clark and his 1929 Essex. This is an everyday working car for Geoff but it still goes like a rocket.

The lovely lines of John King's Ford A cabrioletare evident in this picture--another babied car.
