Anzac Day In Nelson

The 54th anniversary of the ANZAC landings on Gallipoli was observed in Nelson city as it has been for many years - a march from the Post Office to the Church Steps where a memorial service was held. Wreaths were then laid on the memorial on Church Hill (top left and above). It was quite noticeable this year that the ranks of World War 1 veterans have thinned out a lot and even the representation of Second World War servicemen was smaller than at previous observances. At left, a view of the parade at the Church Steps.

Youth was also on parade. Here, Joy Lamb (3rd Nelson) and Joy Ballantyne (1st Nelson), Girls' Brigade standard bearers, listen to Sir Arthur's address.

At the social gathering after the service, old digs got together for a natter and a snifter.

Warrant Officer Jim Upton, who retires from the Army next month, leads his last parade.
