Beautiful Nelson

Yes, Nelson is beautiful! Here in the sunny north-western corner of the South Island of New Zealand is this most-favoured city which seems to have everything ... a climate beyond compare, wonderful beaches, a good port, a boat haven, and a provincial district rich in natural wonders and products of the soil.

Nature has even provided Nelson with a barrier of hills to the south and west, to protect it from cold winds, and a natural breakwater eight miles long to give shelter from the sea. The outlook of the city and district is to the north, to the sunlit waters of Tasman Bay.

The mild climate and fruitful soil are ideal for the production of prolific quantities of fruit of all kinds, tobacco, hops, and many other crops, while the province has the largest native forests in the country, in addition to 75,000 acres of exotic trees.

A few figures tell the story of nature's bounty in Nelson: 5,600,000 pounds of tobacco a year, 2,000.000 cases of apples, over a million pounds of hops, 23,000,000 board feet of indigenous timber alone, and large quantities of stone and small fruits, vegetables, etc.

The district's potential wealth, especially in timber, minerals, and industry, appears to be on the threshold of great development.

The tourist trade has also grown to large proportions. Each year an estimated 100,000 visitors flock to Nelson to enjoy the province's unparalleled holiday resorts, and to seek seasonal employment in the harvest of tobacco, fruit and hops.

In this booklet we have gathered together a selection of pictures designed to show to advantage the attractions of Nelson City and Province.
