Motor Cycle Grand Prix

Some of the top riders in the country competed in the Gisborne Motor Cycle Club's first grand prix held over a 3½ mile circuit at the Willows, Matawhero, on the Saturday of Queen's Birthday weekend.

Undisputed star of the day was the Mount Maunganui rider, Peter Pawson, who expertly handled his 500 Manx machine at speeds up to 150 mph to win three of the six events.

There were 22 starters when the meeting commenced, but unfortunately, several had to retire, due to breakdowns.

The meeting, which is to become an annual event, was attended by a large crowd of spectators.

The sidecar race was thrilling, with the passengers clambering all over the machines and hanging in precarious positions on the corners

Only mishap of the day was when Gisborne's Hink Healey slid on the gravel road approaching a corner. Following him is M. Cleverly of Tauranga.
