Mountain Shelter

The new hut built by the Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club on the slopes of Mt. Hikurangi has proved to be a popular shelter for parties wishing to climb the mountain. Since it was opened in late November it has been in fairly constant use especially during the holiday period, and bookings have been received from as far afield as the South Island.

Between 40 and fifty people attended the opening ceremony, and of these 30 stayed the night, enjoying an impromptu concert in the hut. Most of these climbed to the summit of Hikurangi the next day, and enjoyed the distinction of lunching on the summit of the North Island's fifth highest peak, and the first notable landmark in the world on which the sun shines each day.
