Rip-Roarin' Rodeo

The crowd which turned out to see the Poverty Bay & East Coast Rodeo Association's big day at the Showgrounds on December 31 got their money's worth in thrills and spills. Competing against a formidable array of imported talent, local riders like "Hoppy" Jones, Paddy Gallagher, Colin Stott, and Jack Waru more than held their end up.

Rider gets jarred on stiff-legged horse like this one

President W. Jonasen at the microphone with the line-up of sash-winners. From right to left, they are Alan ("Hoppy") Jones, Gisborne (1st), Jimmy Olsen, Napier (2nd), D. Wright, Wanganui (4th) and Neil Glass, Raetihi (3rd). "Hoppy" is holding a bottle of whisky, and thereby hangs a tale. A certain horse named Blackberry came over from Wanganui, and hadn't been ridden for 14 years. The whisky was a bet that "Hoppy" couldn't ride the outlaw--but he did. And the horse's owner said, "If he can ride him you can have him," so now the Association owns the horse.
