Gale-Force Winds

A southerly buster with gusts up to 55 knots hit Gisborne one night last month. Besides keeping most of the citizenry awake half the night, it broke power and telephone connections, flattened a garage at the Tatapouri Hotel, and felled trees in the vicinity of the Taruheru-Waimata junction in the heart of the city.

Garage at Tatapouri Hotel was scattered over quarter-acre paddock. By a stroke of luck hotelkeeper had helped motorist in trouble that night, had not parked his new car in garage on returning.
