A Big Day...

June 26, 1902, was a big day for Gisborne. On that day, the first section of the Gisborne-Auckland railway, from Gisborne to Ormond, was opened. During the day, about 4000 people, many of whom had never ridden on a railway train before, were given rides to the Park, where a picnic was held.

Buoyant optimism of that day about Auckland line had its high point 15 years later when the line reached Moutohora, faded away in 1959 when rails were lifted.
