Fighting in the Jungle
No, dear reader-these pictures were not sent from Malaya-they were taken at Longbush, up Riverside Road. They don't show a patrol hunting down real terrorists, but they do show volunteer territorials of the 4th Company (Gisborne) R.N.Z.A.S.C., operating under very similar conditions.
Patrol, headed by Sgt Underdown, Sgt Te Puni, and Sgt-Major Henderson, moves over open ground towards "jungle". From here on, they must move stealthily, keep ears and eyes alert for "enemies".`
Entering jungle
S/M Henderson keeps rifle at the ready.
Sgt Underdown covers party in creek-bed. That's not the Kwai Bridge in background, but it could be.

This picture sums up the whole stealthy, eerie, uncertain business of jungle fighting as Chris Peach, with finger on trigger, moves cautiously through jungle.

Patrol member pauses to listen as he climbs hill in bush.
Two scouts bound over open ground to reach position from which to provide cover for rest of party.
Out into the sun again, for a welcome cuppa and a discussion on the manoeuvre.
Men had no complaints about the cooking while in camp—they had to cook for themselves. This is all part of the training.
