Five Records Broken
Five records were broken, and only a single point separated the three top teams at the annual Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay athletic championships held at the Childers Road reserve last month. Napier and Hastings tied for teams points with 48 each, and Gisborne scored 47--the best performance by local athletes in this competition for many years.

Two of the Gisborne athletes who scored notable successes, Kath Bullen set a new time for the women's 440yards of 62.7sec. Her win was made more meritorious by the fact that only three seasons ago she was the victim of a polio attack, and it was thought that her career as an athlete might be finished. With her is the Gisborne team captain, Don McNamara, who won the 220yds and 440yds junior titles.
