Park from Swamp

One of the most remarkable changes in the Gisborne landscape is quietly taking place near the bridge in Grey Street across Waikanae Creek.

There, over the past 18 months, acres of waste river swamp hare been transformed into useful land. The reclamation has been done with rubbish and soil.

This rubbish dump with a purpose has come in for some criticism, but most objectionable features have been overcome, and the finished project should earn nothing but praise.

Gisborne is over-supplied with marshy river-bank tidal areas, and the experiment at Waikanae Creek could promise an eventual transformation for the city's rivers.
