ROWING TEAMS

Rowing is experiencing a resurgence of popularity within the secondary schools in N Z. In recent years Gisborne rowers are among the elite of the country. Lytton High School's U/15 Girls' Coxed Quad won Gold at the recently held North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Champs held at Karipiro. The Boys' Doubles team won Bronze in the U/17 Final. Both teams have set their sights on the 1997 Nationals. It will mean a year of dedicated training and a lot of fundraising too.

The U/17 Lytton Double Team have been together for 2yrs as a team and won Gold at the 1995 Mardi Cup. This year they rowed into a Bronze in the U/17 North Island Secondary Schools Championship Final. The Team: Jared Johnstone (left) Coach Ross Webb and Thomas Clarke.

The Lytton High U/15 Coxed Quad won Gold at the North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships held at Lake Karipiro in March. This was their first season with Coach John Kinder indicating that they have more potential to exploit. Their leadup to the Champs involved 6-8 weeks of 6 days a week, 2hr training sessions. The Team: Cox Karen Bond (left), No2 Erica Doust, No 1 Nicole Johnson, Coach John Kinder, Stroke Tanya Graham and No3 Bridget Maiava.
