MAKARORI FIRST LIGHT LONGBOARD CLASSIC COMPETITION

Having consulting the ultra reliable gurus of surf predicting the inaugral First Light Longboards Competition was scheduled to be held the 1st Weekend of February. With Coca Cola as the major sponsor there were some pretty fancy prizes (2 longboards) attracting lots of surfers from all over N Z. The Creek was an ideal venue throwing some small but rideable 1 to 2 ft waves consistently for the 2 days of the contest. Despite the disappointment of some of the big wave riders who found it hard to get going in the smaller stuff the heats and semi finals left a very talented group going for the top placings. Most pleasing was the number of youngsters who impressed with their mastery of the longboards. A special Expression Session was set aside before the finals for some of these young guns.
