CATALINA Visit

A large crowd of enthusiastic people turned up at the airport to welcome the arrival of the Catalina PBY - 5A (Registration now NZ - PBY) flying boat. With a 32m wing span and protruding 'Blisters' from each side of the aircraft, it was a sight not to be missed. Many people took advantage of the opportunity to participate in the half hour demonstration flights. The Catalina Club has 100 members throughout NZ which enables them to cover insurance charges, and servicing costs.

The Catalina appears to crawl through the sky at a slow lumbering pace but we, in the chasing Air Gisborne Cessna piloted by Kevin Lloyd, had difficulty in getting this close.
