ENDEAVOUR VISIT

The Bark Endeavour was constructed at Mews Road, Freemantle, Western Australia. Laid down on 22nd October 1988. Launched on 9th December 1993. Commissioned on 16th April 1994. Its hull is 33.3m long and 8.89m widebuilt mainly from jarrah as closely as possible to the original.

The visit of the Endeavour Replica was of historical significance as it served to remind us that in 1769 Lieutenant James Cook, of the Royal Navy, sailed into the history books in this place which he named Poverty Bay. Cook was made of stern stuff. He accepted his responsibility to return to England with his ship, its crew and a multitude of scientific and geological information. His voyage of 1768-1771 in HM Bark Endeavour changed the way people thought of the world. It was a remarkable achievement.

The Endeavour sailed into Port of Gisborne amid a flotilla of pleasure craft, fishing vessels and tug boats.

People took advantage of every viewing spot as the Endeavour made its way to its berth by the No2 Shed at the wharf. Large crowds could be seen along the "Cut" by the memmorial to Young Nick and along Waikanae and Midway beaches.

The crew and dignitaries were whisked away by bus to Poho-o-Rawiri Marae for a welcome by the tangata whenua. Sir Henare Ngata summed up Cook's attitude in 1769 by quoting Lord Nelson "England expects every man to do his duty." H.K. added that no ill feeling was directed at this Endeavour or its crew.

The Endeavour berthed at the Wharf, open for inspection for several days. Many Gisborne volunteers were posted at assigned areas above and below decks. It was the experience of a lifetime to explore the Endeavour for an insight to the past.

It was amazing how such a small ship could carry all the men, equipment and provisions to circumnavigate the world. Visitors who were put off by the small charge to look over the Endeavour really did "miss the boat." The crew's mess & the Great Cabin (right) were eye openers. This visit by the Endeavour really was long overdue and her return is definitely looked forward to.

Looking forward from the stern. The red poll is the rudder arm. Ropes & rigging were intriguing.
