CocaCola SURFING NATIONALS

The 1996 Surfing Nationals were held at Whales, Wainui Beach over a week during the month of January. Approximately 200 surfers competed in slight onshore conditions in up to 1.5 metre swells. The Gisborne Board Riders Club once again hosted a well organised tournament. There were 11 events held, with the Open won by local Wainui surfer Maz Quinn. Other Gisborne title winners were: Jay Quinn U/14, John Gisby won the Vetrans for the third consecutive time, Ainsley Gunness won the Junior Women and was second in the Open Women.
