PORT EXPANSION
Port of Gisborne plans for the future of the Gisborne Wharf area were revealed at a function held at the Poverty Bay Club. They have purchased the whole of the Weddel area, to develop larger storage facilities, allowing around the clock loading; proposed a new access road to the port & Kaiti Beach; extension of the International Wharf to allow 2 x 190m vessels to load at the same time; deepening the channel by 1.5 m to 10.5m & maintenance work on the breakwater. All work to be completed by 1999 utilising the 1994 total assets of $16 million with no partners needed to finance the operation.
G.D.C. District Engineer, Bill Turner, will be overseeing the plans for relocation of access to the port & to Kaiti Beach.
