NZ SALOON CAR CHAMPIONSHIP

The Awapuni Speedway is always a popular venue for action since it was opened on the 2-1-1971. A dedicated band of enthusiasts maintain the facilities & the 390 metre racing track so that spectacular racing can be held in our area. The NZ Saloon Car Championships are held at each of the 15 Speedway tracks throughout the country. Two great nights of racing saw a great effort by "A" Grade locals Ken Dibbens,Sam Lyle & Steve Gooch.Doug Walsh showed his class by driving his Chev Corvette into 9th place. We dedicate this page to the Consolation Race on Saturday night and the next page to the Caravan Derby night 2 weeks later.

Getting set for a start in the 1st of the Consolation Races for those who didn't quite make the cut into the 20 Finalists. Sam Lyle in his 2nd year, No 99 the hot red nosed Nissan 300ZX 2 litres of turbo power, sitting 4th in the outside line. Ken Dibbens, No 21 the Chev Camaro, is sitting in 4th position in the inside line. No 17, the blue Ford Sierra of Steve Gooch, is in 7th position in the inside line.

Ken Dibbens, No 21 with the power down, on the inside line followed by plenty of action as others seek advantage from any errors. Sam Lyle, running wide with Steve Gooch on the inside, managed a 2nd in race 3.
