During one of New Zealand's bleakest weeks of Test rugby with three test losses in a row, Gisborne glowed in the success of "their" 1st XV at the World Schools 1st XV Rugby Championships held in Bowral, Australia. This champion team from Gisborne Boys' High School defeated Monument High School (Johannesburg, South Africa) 47-3, St. Stanislaus College (Bathurst, Australia) 36-11, St. Andrews Scots College (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 56-8 and St. Stephens School (Auckland) 13-3 on their way to winning the final against Maritzburg College (Natal, South Africa) 44-6. For the 25 or so supporters who followed the tour, it must have been a wonderful trip and the support from ex-Gisborne people, now living in Australia who turned up at the various matches, was amazing. GBHS scored 196 points with 31 against, made up of 34 tries and their line was only crossed twice. The city of Gisborne showed their pride in this achievement by giving the contingent a civic reception in their honour at Poho-o-rawiri Marae.
