WESTPAC Music Awards
The Gisborne Regional Final of the Westpac School Music Contest for Chamber Music was held at the Lawson Field Theatre. 60 secondary school students were entered as 14 groups. Northern Regional Adjudicator, Donald Maurice from Dunedin, was impressed with the talent that was available in a city the size of Gisborne. The Westpac competitions have spanned 28 years (Donald Maurice made it to the National Finals in that 1st year) & prior to 1987 local contestants had to travel to Napier to compete. The success of the competition was reflected in the full house for the awards. All profits from the 2 sessions woul go to the Charles Wilkinson Trust, a committee which assists young musicians with instuments etc.
