NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP
SHEEP DOG TRIALS

The North Island Championship Sheep Dog Trials held on Turihaua and Whiti Whiti Stations at Whangara, were a major success for the Poverty Bay Centre. Gisborne turned on ideal weather for the 200 or so competitors who had qualified to take part in each event and spectators were able to watch some outstanding runs over six days of competition. The run offs with the top 7 competitors were close and exciting, particularly the Straight Huntaway event, where local veteran Stan Smith and his dog Brin were 2nd by a dog's whisker to ex-Gisborne-ite Kevin Mead. It took a top run from another ex-local, Bernard Arends and Patrick of Pahiatua, to beat PB Centre Vice-President Rod Mead and Kip into second in the Short Head and Yard. Barry McGregor from Porongahau and Troy were worthy winners of the Zig Zag Huntaway. However, the biggest thrill for all the Poverty Bay people who had worked so hard to make the Championship such a success, came in the Longhead event when Merv Utting and Len put up an outstanding performance to win by 5 points. Congratulations to all who were a part of one of the best North Island trials ever.

First to run in the Longhead event was Gisborne dog trial personality Taka Broughton and his dog Lou.

Poverty Bay Centre Life Member Bill Teutenberg and Mac were both keen and enthusiastic before their run in the Longhead.

One thing most dog trialists have, apart from talent, is a great sense of humour

The old campaigner Stan Smith showed great stockmanship hunting three difficult sheep to the top of the Straight Hunt with Brin. He thoroughly deserved his 2nd place with the high standard of work proving what a master he is.

Merv Utting is one of New Zealand's outstanding dog trialists. Winning the Long Head event this year gave him his 3rd North Island title. Previously he had competed and won with Wag in the Straight Hunt at Masterton in 1979 and Von in the Short Head & Yard in 1991 at Taranaki. Merv has 2 NZ titles to his credit as well, both with Pat in the Long Head event, in 1980 at Te Anau and Canterbury in 1984. This modest, unassuming Waimata farmer who began trialing in 1961, is a champion with dogs and has a totally supportive wife Connie who follows his great love of trialing. The strain of running in 42 NZ and Island finals has been immense but it shows the high standard and calibre of the man who has few equals in the sport of dog trialing
