Snow In Matawai

August brought cold weather to Gisborne and the East Coast, and with it came an unpleasant epidemic of influenza which put many people into their beds. Heavy falls of snow covered most of the North Island high country and extended down to the foothills; when the wind blew from south or west it brought a real breath of winter.

Badminton team which left Gisborne earlier for Mount Maunganui had trouble with snow on Trafford's Hill, and slips in the gorge, where they had to spend the night. They reached the Mount at 2 p. m. next day. Pictures below and at right were taken by Harry Peterse.
