Golf Classic

236 golfers took to the fairways and greens of the Poverty Bay course in the Gisborne Milk Industries golf classic, raising funds for the PB/EC Golf Association. Nell Gooch was the winner of the 1994 Gisborne Speedway's Demolition Derby Trophy (which he donated to the club in 1992) when this HQ Holden was able to continue to ciculate and eliminate all remaining cars. Nell has since pulled the guards and front bits off but maintains that the car could still do a lap of honour.

Members of the Moananui Longboard Club met to contest the "9ft plus Original pre '68 Surfboards Contest" held at Whales with 4ft sets. Finalists were: Ian Proctor, Gray Clapham, Jeff Probert (who won on borrowed boards), Clayton Gibson (the defending Champion), Owen Williams, young Joseph and American Mike McLaughlin.

Gary Martin's outstanding success as Coach of the Enterprise Swim Team has National recognition as he has been named as the Head Coach of the HZ Age Group Swimming Team. Gary and his assistant coach Roger Scott are pictured with the trophies that the club has won in the recent swimming season.

The band Tribal Connection were videoed by TVNZ as a part of the preparation for a rooftop concert to be televised in Auckland. At the session at Brix were: Sonny Broughton, Wenerel Maynard, TVNZ's Hira Henderson with baby Nicholas Ratapu, Haare Kepa, Muru KiriKiri, Samma Taltuha, Malcolm Ratapu and TVNZ's Lawrence Wharererau. Sitting with the guitar is Jase Wairea and Willie Donnelly. The band will represent Turanga FM at the concert.

Children from Gisborne will compete at the Mini Olympics in the Cook Islands due to fundraising by CCS in our generous community. Bruce White, Alan Priday, Lovey Crawford, Amber Cannell (centre), Jim Deare, Sonny Bell, Pat Farmer, Janine Cannell, Helen Smith, Mary Ngaronoa and Robyn Metcalfe. The Hugh M. Bodle Shield is the prize for an inter club swimming competition held annually since 1951 (except 1993) The best 3 of each age group through 6 age groups swim for points. Raewyn Bull (top left), Greg Meade the Comet Team Coach (top right) and Nigel O'Leary (right) with some of the Jubulant 1994 Comet Swim Team who won the much coverted Bodle Shield at the Olympic Pool where they have their clubrooms.
