This photo taken of professional cyclists in the early 1920s shows a view of Kaiti Hill taken on Ormond Road. Alan Sutton, Ernie Fitzmaurice, Hugh Twigley (Davy Crocket hat), George Twigley and Cliff Church are among these cyclists. Allan Sutton (5th from left) won the Timaru to Christchurch Classic race in 1921. In the 1920s Makaraka School helda one mile race from the Royal Oak Hotel, now the Jolly Stockman, to the Roseland Hotel at Makaraka.
