Since the new Photo News began three months ago, we have been innundated with calls from people who have a collection stashed away at home somewhere. One such collection came our way the other day and it will provide a valuable library for future issues. The March 1961 issue contained some interesting facts about Photo News. The first issue was published in 1954 and sales were 900. The staff was then one and a half (the Editor/ Printer and his wife, part-time)and a machine the size of an office duplicator printed the magazine. By 1961 there were 14 members of staff producing 24,000 copies published in 4 cities -Gisborne, New Plymouth, Wanganui and Nelson. Logan Publishing Company also printed the Photo News for independent owners at Pukekohe, Rotorua and Hamilton. The name "Photo News" was adopted from a newspaper in Owatanna, Minnesota U.S.A.A survey at the time showed that some copies of the magazine were read by over 30 people and 7000 copies were published for Gisborne alone. A measure of the success of the Photo News was voiced by a Scotsman on holiday in N.Z. in 1961. He said he knew more about Gisborne than his own home town through reading Photo News which was sent to him regularly by a friend. We know that several of our first issue surfaced in London recently. It is an ideal way to keep in touch. Most early issues reenforced the idea of Gisborne being a great place to live in. We agree with that sentiment and hope it is evident in the pictures contained in this latest publication of the Photo News.
