Harbour Tidings

Several items of shipping interest have occurred over the past few weeks, creating quite a lot of comment in and around the Gisborne harbour basin.

At No.1 Wharf the Harbour Board dredge is shown blowing the boiler down for the last time after nigh on 40 years' service. The crane is to be dismantled and the boat used in future for suction dredging. It will be operated in conjunction with a tug.

Wilson's bulk cement carrier, the "Cement King," paid its first visit to Gisborne recently. Features of this particular ship are its bow and stern thrusters (which allow it to virtually turn on the spot), and its high degree of manoeuvrability. (Pics by Harry MacDonald).

A close-up of the "Cement King's" bow indicates the strength of this powerful ship.

The dry dock is still used to advantage by Gisborne boats. The "Janet" is up for repairs to her stem which can be seen stoved in just below the water line.

The streamlined P. & O. cargo carrier "Taupo" had to call and anchor in the bay recently for repairs to her blower. The "Taupo" had already loaded meat and wool at Gisborne and was 50 miles off Gisborne again on her way to the U.K. (after loading at Napier) when the fault was discovered. Note the latest in cargo handling derricks.
