Stuck In The Mud

The survey ship H.M.N.Z.S. Lachian hit a papa shelf by the slipway on November 16 when leaving Gisborne after a short farewell visit. The steering stopped working and the ship drifted, ending up against the breakwater. It was then tied to the breakwater but as the tide went out the Lachian became stuck in the mud. After a concerted effort by the Harbour Board tug and the Wattie trawler "Kaiti," the ship was pulled free. However, it was several days. before the ship was repaired and able to leave port.
