Peace and Quiet. . . And a Lot of Hot Air

The peace and quiet of ballooning can only be appreciated by those who have flown in one of these craft, and for Mrs Claire Dyer of Mill Road a long-time ambition to try her hand at the sport came to fruition recently. She spent 10 days at Tocumwal (200 miles north of Melbourne, Australia), with a ballooning group.

A balloon takes 65,000 cubic feet of hot air when inflated. It travels at a speed of about 50 knots and at an altitude of 500 to 1500 feet.

Mrs Dyer will be a foundation member of a New Zealand group, the Firefly Group, which hopes to start ballooning in the Waikato in July. Their balloon, "Bernina," is at present under manufacture in England. Ballooning is not a particularly easy sport to master as the weather must be carefully studied and wind currents Well understood. However it has its own rewards and gives much satisfaction to the participants.
