One Of the Country's Best : the Poverty Bay Golf Links

Photo Newsmen Bob Logan and John Berry delighted in the tree-shaded, undulating scenes like the one above as Brian plays down the fairway of the thirteenth.

Brian won the club's Easter handicap and a more recent handicap tournament this month.

A meat inspector, he is to be transferred soon to Christchurch. where he will continue his golfing career.

Evelyn is a promising member of the ladies' club.

Awapuni, Gisborne's golf links by the sea, is a constant source of pride and pleasure to members of the Poverty Bay Golf Club. Players of the calibre of Bobby Locke, Norman von Nida and Jean Donald have been generous in their praise.
But nothing short of perfection will satisfy the P.B. club's committee. Already green-keepers are busy making the links more difficult for long-hitters in preparation for the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament to be held here next year.

With the help of Evelyn Garbett and Brian Halstead "Photo News" spent a pleasant afternoon on the links recently.

World-class South African golfer Bobby Locke, pictured above at Avapuni a year ago, described the links' last six holes as among the most difficult he had played.

At right, Brian demonstrates the tricky approach to the 14th green, bunkered at each side, with an uphill slope. He has chosen an 8 iron to control the ball's flight between the bunkers.

×

But thanks to the care of pro. Ed Fennell and his team of green-keepers, the greens themselves are almost velvet-smooth......a fact that Evelyn (below) appreciates as she putts at the 13th.

The 15th at Awapuni is a long, straight fairway where a long-hitting player can flex his muscles. But it has its share of hazards.

The green is flanked by bunkers. Brian lofts his ball out of one with a wedge.

There are trees on either side lying in wait (above right) for the sliced or hooked ball.

×

And there is a deep hollow in the approach from which Evelyn (below) cannot see the green as she addresses the ball with her 8 iron.

The approach to the 16th green can mean trouble, with a banker on the right and the rough close by on the left.

The late-afternoon sun casts long shadows across the eighteenth fairway.

Brian gets there safely with a 5 iron.

Evelyn's in trouble here...she's blasting her ball on to the bunker-encircled No. 2 green . Most of the club's holes-in-one occur at the 110yd second hole.

Evelyn uses an 8 iron to lift her ball from a donga on the 10th.

George Old and Leigh File are pictured making a new bunker to trap the long-hitters on the 18th.
