The Last Barrel

Modern methods of shipping pelts have made barrels for the purpose redundant. Mr Lou McLachlan, for 17 years the cooper at the Gisborne Refrigerating Co. Ltd, has made his last barrel at the works' cooperage in Crawford Road, now that the company will use the new square, space-saving containers. Making a barrel is quite an art, as Mr McLachlan shows in our pictures.

The shaped staves of white pine are fitted together at one end to form the beginnings of the barrel.

The finishing touch is tapping down the hoops prior to fitting in the head. Before this quite a number of processes are involved.

A quarter hoop is tapped down. The shape of the staves making them stay put at this stage. The embryo barrel is then placed over a small fire . . . after which it is sprayed with water, this combination making the wood supple

A wire rope is looped round the open end, which is winched together, then hooped

After drying, the inside grooves are shaped on a lathe heading machine

The chine hoop is loosened, the head fitted into place, and the hoop retightened. The barrel is upended and is now ready for use.
