Pictures From The Past

From Mrs B. Moss, 15 Bayly Street, comes this pic of the Gladstone Road bridge taken in the early days. At this stage there had been no formation of the inner harbour although there are a number of buildings around the site, plus a sprinkling of shops and stores just over the bridge itself.

Taken during the same era, this shot shows the view up Gladstone Road from the centre of the bridge. Oh, for the good old slower days! Traffic is so constant on the bridge these days that both photographer and camera would be flattened in the time it took to take these pictures.

From Mrs D. B. Cassidy we have this old pic from 1914. It is of the Tokararangi football team of Te Araroa, winners of the Mullooly Cup in 1914. That season they played six games for five wins and one draw. Back row: N. Kahaki, T. Kahaki, T. Huriwai, W. Walker, W. Morrell, I. Paringatai, W. Grace, K. Tawhiro, W; Waiapu. Middle row: J. Wanoa, J. Kaika, P. Wanoa (president), H. Rogers (captain), J. H. Mullooly, M. Wanoa (vicecaptain), K. Huriwai. Front row: T. Wanoa, N. Huriwai. P. Wanoa is Mrs Cassidy's grandfather, and the other Wanoa boys are her granduncles.
