Highest Award

The Diploma of the Royal New Zealand Life- Saving Society (the society's highest award) was recently presented to Andrew Kerr (left) by the president of the Gisborne branch, Mr A. H. De Costa. The award is the culmination of five years of study and practical tests. The Bronze medallion must first be gained, after which follows the Bronze Cross, then the Award of Merit. All these exams require a high degree of skill in swimming, artificial respiration (on the land and in the water) and water rescues. The exam for the Diploma is tough, many trying but few succeeding. Andrew is the fifth person. to gain the Diploma since the Gisborne branch was formed in 1937 and he is now its chief examiner.
