Puku Smiler, George Grace, and Joe, Kiki and Charlie Smiler at 112 Ballance Street are pictured with some of the pingao brought up from Foxton Beach by them. The fibres from the treated pingao are to be used in the making of meetinghouse panels. It is left hanging for three days, turning yellow in that time, after which it is ready for use. The elders of Foxton helped the Smilers to gather the pingao and gave them advice on the weaving of the finished fibres. This is all in aid of the restoration of the historic Rongopai meetinghouse in Lavenham Road.
