Dramatic Bridge Subsidence

The next day, at Tolaga Bay, on February 19, 1938, the flooding rains which had lashed the coast were responsible for the dramatic subsidence of the bridge over the Uawa river. The bridge was closed for several days, effectively blocking the return south of people attending the 50th jubilee of the Tolaga Bay school. Fortunately the new bridge was completed with only the approaches to be finished.
