Although Gisborne now has one of the most modern court houses in the country, the first court case was not heard in anything like so pretentious a building. The actual first court sitting, presided over by Mr McLean, a visiting J.P., involved the selling of gunpowder to the natives. In what month of what year did this court sitting take place?
