A painting competition with a Christmas theme was run by John Bull Stores just before Christmas. The winner was chosen from twelve finalists who had to paint the pictures to be judged on "canvasses" fixed to the store window. Some of the contestants seen at work (left), are Robyn Hansen, Marion Mitchell, Darryl White and Karen Scragg. At right, Sefton Gregory presents winner David Irvine, Ormond, with his prize, a monstrous box of chocolates.

These four ladies presented a good novelty number at the Makaraka - Matawhero C.W.I. Christmas party - knee puppets. To the appropriate tune of "Puppet on a String" the dolls appeared to dance and sing of their own accord. The four actual performers backstage are Pam Tohill, Norma Mitchell and Margaret Kirk, and below are the puppets as they appeared to the audience.

The Gisborne Roller skating team again acquitted themselves well in this year's champs at Rotorua and Wanganui with Graeme Fox and Ron Scott annexing the juvenile and junior titles respectively.
