Tom Ross retired at the end of last year after 40 years' service with the Railways. Prior to the last 21 years spent in Gisborne, he was for 16 years, stationed in Taumarunui. He started his career as junior porter at Ohakune. Tom is seen stepping down from a goods train on his last run.

Adding fresh laurels to his short but impressive list of titles is young Dean Kelling, son of Arthur and Yvonne Kelling, 17 Pare Street, Wainui. At Opotiki recently he took the Master Opotiki title. In 1966 he took the Master Opotiki and Wainui titles, while in 1967 he was runner-up.

The six prefects from the Intermediate School called on Public Relations Officer John Burland to present a cheque for $10 towards the appeal for the Gisborne Coat of Arms. The money was collected by appeal at the school. The prefects are Lynette Walker, Lyn Borrie, Philippa Ryan, Mr Burland, Kaye Ottaway, David Light and Lester Waugh.

Two long service members of the Te Rau Press staff retired at the end of last year. They were George Robertson and Dick Comber. Pictured with their wives after the presentations honouring their retirement are the recipients, and other members of the staff - Max Stevens, Len Third, Elaine Petherick and Ray Meade.
