Air Training Corps

×

The fine body or young men seen above comprises the Gisborne Squadron of the Air Training Corps, assembled in the Army Hall for their regular weekly parade. As members of the corps they are taught a wide range of subjects, such as meteorology, navigation, airmanship, air dynamics, armaments, air frames, technical radio, administration, and so on. Most of them will do their compulsory military training in the Air Force. Many will go on to make the Air Force their career. In the front row, left to right, are Sgt Holst, Cpl Redstone, Cadets Walker, Legg, Foster, Sisterson, Wells, Bennett, Pettit, Scholium, F/Sgt Markie, Cadet Vincent, Cpl Shaw, and Clp Brett. Middle Row: Cadets Mulrooney, Kent, Hall, Cantlon, Dunstan, Taylor, Hadler, Grundy, Walker, Sutherland, Scragg, Schultz and Grant. Back row: Sgt Jones, Cadets Carr, Hardy, Gardner, Martin, Neverman, Symes, Wauchop, Scales, Cpl Akroyd, Cadet Jones.

Boys are fortunate in that all their instructors are ex-Air Force active service personnel who bring a wide range of experience to the job. Here F/Lt D. J. Phillips, D.F.C., who instructs in aerodynamics and airmanship, is seen taking a class. He is also instructor to the Gisborne Aero Club.

F/O Wakelin is seen here demonstrating use of compass. Squadron has supplied several cadets to permanent Air Force. Both Gisborne Borough and Cook County councils make grants to help selected cadets to learn to fly with Gisborne Aero Club.
