Historic Poverty Bay NO. 4

The Wearenga-a-hika hotel was well established in the 1870's and from the Poverty Bay Standard of that era we quote an advertisement for the hotel, whose proprietor at that time was a Mr William Cooper.

"This well known and favourite house of call is situated at the junction roads of the country districts, and is provided with every convenience for parties visiting Ormond and elsewhere."

Owners of racehorses were able "to rent dry, spacious, well-ventilated stabling and loose boxes as the proprietor is also the lessee of the Waerenga Race Course." Commodious sale yards and a first-class, well appointed billiard table were also available, but, sorry, no TV.
