Ten years ago, and 187 years after Captain James Cook's Endeavour sailed into Poverty Bay on its voyage of discovery, the second Endeavour, an R.N.Z.N. Antarctic supply ship, steamed past historic Young Nicks Head to make her first visit to Gisborne.
Guy Fawkes day of 1956 was celebrated in spectacular style with a magnificent display of fireworks at Waikanae Beach, organised by the Beach Carnival Committee.
Gisborne's second secondary school, the Girls' High, was officially opened in November, 1956. Although in use since the beginning of that year, the opening was delayed until the school and grounds were completed.
