It Happened In Gisborne
Ten Years Ago
The war on polio got under way in Gisborne in October, 1956, when the Department of Health commenced inoculating primary school children with an English version of the Salk vaccine. First children to receive their "jabs" were Susan and Stuart Tyer, of Central School, seen here with Dr V. Davidson.
The Cook Hospital's £185,000, six-storey nurses' home, now a familiar landmark on the hospital hill skyline, was officially opened ten years ago.
Plagued by troubles, the new Matawhero road bridge across the Waipaoa River was still several months off completion when this picture was taken two years after work commenced.
