In an effort to overcome the shortage of lemons available for juice for the manufacture of soft drinks and cordials, the Eastern Bottling Company conducted a competition during the school holidays to tap the reservoir of lemons from backyard trees. The entrants supplying the most lemons were awarded prizes as well as making a profit on the deal. The contest provided over 21 tons of lemons which shows that plenty of fruit can be grown in the district. From left are Mr F. Meade (company manager), Susan Chatfield with her bike for 1st, Murray McDermott with his transistor for 2nd, Judy Cameron with her wrist watch for 3rd, and Mr E. Hansen, company secretary.
