To maintain the high standard of Gisborne bowling greens, more than usual care & attention are required. Following the skilled ministrations of local experts, greens are produced which draw high praise from visitors, and which stand up well to tournament play sometimes extending over the best part of a week.

Mr Powell spreading seed, and Mr V. Hoist, president of the club, and Mr F. Downey sweeping it into the drills. After them comes Mr J. Ward, spreading fine soil to fill the drills and cover the seed. Result, if weather allows, is a fine stand of new grass.

Mr H. E. Powell, greens supervisor at Kahutia. is seen working a machine of his own manufacture after the Easter tournament. This machine cuts quarter-inch parallel drills in the lawn.

The Matawai Memorial Hall, a fine example of how modern treatment can make an attractive result from a relatively plain structure without over-elaboration. Hall is often the subject of high praise from travellers passing through this township 47 miles inland from Gisborne on north highway.
