Harvesting Maize

Harvesting maize crops is a late autumn job for contractors in the Gisborne district. One of the earliest crops to be grown here, maize from Gisborne has made its name known all over Nov Zealand. As Nelson is the home of tobacco, Poverty Bay is the home of maize.

Cobs, stripped by harvester and elevated into truck running alongside, are then stored in cribs to mature. Most local maize finds its way into fowl and animal foods of various kinds.
